After the tsunami hit Sri Lanka in 2004, the people of Sri Lanka were devastated, losing loved ones and precious belongings. Even now, many families still live in temporary wooden houses because they are not allowed to rebuild within 100 meters of the sea. However, the artisan guild Lydia Cooperative brings the people of Sri Lanka together for a time of restoration. The time they spend sewing purses and tote bags, a guild spokesperson says, “is a great opportunity for them to forget their troubles as they socialize with other women and hear stories of hope."
